“The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy,” authored by Royal biographer Robert Hardman, who states that Harry and Meghan departing from the Firm as working royals strengthened Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth’s connection.

Harry and Meghan Thought They Could Have Their Cake and Eat it Too

Harry and Meghan wanted to have their cake and eat it, too. They thought they could move to sunny California and step back from their royal duties yet still perform their royal obligations and work outside the royal family.

Needless to say, the Queen and Charles were both in agreement that this was out of the question, as the two of them prompted the Sussexes to make a decision: they were either in or out.

Harry and Meghan could have had it all Royal Family

The couple officially stepped down as working royals in January 2020. The infamous “Megxit” created a rift within the royal family, but it served a good purpose: it brought the Queen and Charles closer.

    Hardman explained to People magazine,

“I don’t think that anything could really trump the sense of shock felt by the Oprah Winfrey interview. That was huge.”

The revelations made by Harry and Meghan during the March 2021 interview were horrifying to the royal family. Meghan claimed that when she was pregnant with her son, there were “conversations” and “concerns” about how dark Archie’s color would be.

The Duchess of Sussex wouldn’t reveal who supposedly made these remarks at the time. Instead, Harry and Meghan both told Oprah that revealing the name of the mystery “racist” royal would be very damaging to them.

The Duke and Duchess Played the Victim Card

To say the interview sent shockwaves throughout the royal family and the UK in general would be an understatement. Much of the US hadn’t seen through Harry and Meghan’s attention-seeking and narcissistic victimhood act yet.

Oprah seemed genuinely shocked and dismayed by the revelation. Hardman said that both the Queen and Charles needed to

    “appear pragmatic to the public.”

They understood their duty to respond to these allegations and find a subtle way to assure the public that this was a bald-faced lie.

“There was a sort of weary resignation, but also a sense that ‘look, I’ve got so much to worry about now that I don’t have the luxury of dwelling on this,” Hardman reasoned. “If that’s what they want to do. I mean, there’s only so much a father can do. And the door is always open.”

Hardman explained that the royal family went through a difficult period when Harry and Meghan left, and they still have fleeting thoughts about all they could accomplish if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were still a part of the team.

After the Oprah interview, in January 2023, Harry released his tell-all memoir, “Spare,” in which he trashed his family and vilified his brother, Prince William.

Harry spoke of a physical altercation between the brothers, where William threw Harry into the dog bowl, leaving cuts all over his body.

    Still, Hardman concluded that

“There’s no question that Harry and Meghan are a great loss to the institution, and that is still appreciated and understood. There’s absolutely no sense of good riddance or anything like that. It’s fundamentally a source of deep regret.”
