Kate Middleton, Prince William, and King Charles are all taking a break from their royal duties. The three carry a hefty load for the monarchy and the Commonwealth.
The Royals Work on Behalf of the Crown
There is no replacing any of the three of them. People wonder how the monarchy survives when only a handful of working royals perform their royal duties. There are officially ten working royals.
The working royals carry out their duties on behalf of the crown. The public saw who the working royals were during King Charles’s coronation as they joined the King and Queen on the terrace of Buckingham Palace.
Some royals are not as present in the press as others. The royal family is a mystery because this group of people is nothing, if not private and discreet. Well, except for Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and Prince Andrew, of course.
So the big question is, what does each working royal do for the monarchy and its people? Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, and his consort, Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester, are both working royals.
The couple is involved in working for several charities. These include the Children’s Society, which helps young people who are dealing with issues ranging from abuse, exploitation, and neglect.
They also work for Hope for Youth, Northern Ireland, and Scottish Opera, which has community-based projects that support diversity.
William and Kate Represent the Modern Era of Working Royals
The Duke of Kent, Prince Edward, presents trophies at Wimbledon, and his charity work essentially involves war remembrance. He served in the armed forces for 21 years.
Prince Edward, Charles’s brother, and his wife, Sophie, The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, have the Wessex Trust foundation, which supports registered charities for young people.
The husband and wife, Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence, did much for the monarchy. Laurence served in the Royal Navy and is now Chairman of the English Royal Heritage, which cares for over 400 state-owned historic sites.
Princess Anne is also known as “The hardest-working royal.” She undertook a staggering 457 royal engagements in 2023.
She often oversees multiple engagements in one day. Princess Anne is also involved in over 300 charities, including The Royal Trust for Carers, which supports adults responsible for caring for someone. She is also President of Save the Children, which helps children attain a bright future.
Princess Alexandria is involved in the Florence Nightingale Foundation, which scholarships nurses and midwives to study. She is also a patron of the British Red Cross Society.
Last but not least is Prince William and Princess Catharine. Kate is renowned for her work for children’s charities.
Kate launched the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood to spread awareness about why the first five years of life are imperative to future outcomes. William and Kate also have a mental health charity called Heads Together. This couple represents the modern era of the royal family.
So, while Charles, William, and Kate are not available to work at the moment, other royals are happy to lend a helping hand.
