‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers reveal that it has been one year today since we lost our beloved Sonja Eddy, who beautifully played the role of Epiphany Johnson, General Hospital’s no-nonsense head nurse with a heart of gold.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Epiphany Was a Mainstay On the Show
The writers introduced Epiphany in March 2006, and she was a mainstay on the show. She was always there to give advice, whether asked for or not. Epiphany was supportive when someone was down, and she never minced words.
Nurse Johnson was often candid with those who needed to hear it. One example is when she caught Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) when he was pretending he couldn’t walk. She wasn’t shy about calling him out on it.
Sonny had (predictably) suffered from a gunshot wound that left him paralyzed. She refused to allow him to give up on his health and his family, as she was determined to see him walk again.
Epiphany also had a remarkable sense of wisdom that drew people toward her. The residents of Port Charles valued her opinion and looked to her for guidance.
Epiphany also comforted those suffering from losses, whether it was her patients or her work family at General Hospital. When Dr. Patrick Drake (Jason Thompson) was dealing with the loss of his beloved Robin Scorpio (Kimberly McCullough) after everyone believed she had died.
She gave Patrick helpful advice when Robin “died,” and she was a shoulder to lean on.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Epiphany Always Gave Helpful Advice
Epiphany also gave Bobbie Spencer (Jackie Zeman) advice about her type II diabetes, of which she faced her own experiences and challenges.
She helped her friend learn how to live and navigate through it. She went beyond the call of duty a time or two to nurse Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) when he suffered from a gunshot wound, which tends to be commonplace for many of the residents of Port Charles.
Then, of course, there was the annual Nurses’ Ball, and she put her heart and soul into it every year. Her 2017 performance, when she sang “Hallelujah,” was incredibly moving and memorable.
Keeping up with all the problems and drama at General Hospital was something that Epiphany did naturally. She never met someone she didn’t want to help.
Epiphany was also studying to become a doctor. It was always her dream to devote her life to healing people. She touched everyone’s lives in Port Charles.
She also started her storyline with a new love interest, Marshall Ashford (Robert Gossett). The two of them bonded over their love of music. They were beginning to have a powerful connection.
This sentiment is how the show decided to say goodbye to Epiphany. Epiphany died a hero; she saved someone who was in an accident and waited for the paramedics to get to the person, sacrificing her own life, as the fumes from the accident aggravated her heart condition. That’s pure Epiphany. She put everyone else above herself. It was her calling.
Sonja Eddy passed after suffering from complications of an infection following nonemergency surgery. She was a wonderful person and a force of nature; Sonja and Epiphany will be missed.
