King Charles is someone about whom everyone has an opinion. Whether you support him or not, he is a polarizing figure. People respect him as the King, but he may never live down his past scandals.
Many People Cannot Forgive Charles for His Treatment of Princess Diana
Many people still have not forgiven Charles for his poor treatment of Princess Diana. Diana was beloved as “The People’s Princess.” She was a lifelong advocate for several worthy causes. She was kind, and her humanity was revered.
When King Charles was the Prince of Wales, he couldn’t seem to understand why he could not be married to Princess Diana and still keep his mistress, Camilla Parker Bowles.
He even said once that he would like to be reincarnated as a tampon so he could live inside Camilla’s trousers. Charles and Camilla had a private phone call in 1989; however, their (not so confidential) call was made available and printed in the People newspaper. The phenomenon was known as the “Tampongate scandal.”
The press released the call three months after Charles and Diana separated. He hardly seems like monarch material after reading it.
One thing is true about the public, they never forget. Charles’ affair with Camilla damaged Diana’s self-esteem and exacerbated her bulimia and self-harm habits. While it is true that life continues, what Charles did to Diana speaks to his character, maybe not as a king but as a man.
Charles gifted Camilla a personalized bracelet to Camilla two weeks before marrying Diana. He never even tried to hide his obvious affection for Camilla.
The attention the Princess garnered from the media made Charles very jealous. People just adored her. She was clearly the more popular half of the royal couple.
Queen Elizabeth Had “Pulling Power”
Another royal whose approval rating was higher than Charles’s is his mother, Queen Elizabeth. “No one is under any illusion that he has the same pulling power,” a royal expert says.
In his book “Endgame,” Omid Scobie said that Queen Elizabeth protected her image and the royal family. Elizabeth had old-school values.
“Meanwhile, Charles’s role was described as to secure the sail until the next in line, William can take over.”
Scobie explains that
“the establishment is merely riding out the years while Charles is in reign until William, Kate, and their children can take over the spotlight and make the royals great again.”
According to the controversial author,
“King Charles will never reach the national treasure status his mother, the Queen, achieved.”
Scobie suggests that Charles has always put himself first. You can even see that with his marriage to Diana. He never considered for even a second that his philandering made him look dishonorable and weak.
Charles is also jealous of his son, William. He is well aware that England is waiting with bated breath for William to step into his place.
Omid goes as far as to say,
“The former Prince of Wales is not only far less popular than his predecessor and successor, but he is also a thorn in the institution’s side. King Charles knows his reign is only transitional.”
Support him or not, it’s the truth.
