‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers finds that John J. York (Mac Scorpio) is a fighter. This week, he began the transplant process to battle his cancer. York’s longtime friend and castmate, Jon Lindstrom (Kevin Collins) took to social media to ask that fans say a prayer for York during this difficult time.

In December 2022, York was diagnosed with both myelodysplastic syndromes and multiple smoldering myeloma. Both are blood and bone marrow disorders.

‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: John J. York is Undergoing Life-Saving Treatment for Cancer

He went on a search to locate a donor and he finally found one on the site, BetheMatch.org. In the months that followed this miracle, a series of tests were conducted on John and his donor.

The tests were done to ensure that his body would adapt to the transplanted stem cells. John has now moved forward with the process.

John has started his life-saving treatment, and he remains cautious but optimistic. When York spoke to People magazine, he said,

“There’s still a long road ahead, but these next 100 days, I would say, is rocky terrain.”

York must go to the hospital every day for the next 100 days for testing. The first week, he will undergo chemotherapy. He said that he will most likely lose his hair, and he is not worried about it.

The chemo eradicates everything that is in his blood and DNA from his whole life, and they need to clean it out to transplant what was provided by the donor. Basically, he will be starting with a clean slate.

Several complications may occur from all this. He could pass away when the transplant starts.

He will need to go to the hospital every 100 days for testing, again to monitor for complications. The most crucial time during all this is the first 20 days.

‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: The First 14-20 Days Are Crucial

    York explains,

“I would say the first probably 14 to 20 days out, they’ll be able to tell with testing daily how I’m receiving and accepting the stem cells.”

Of course, there is also trepidation about having to undergo five more bone marrow biopsies. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, the biopsy uses a small needle that goes into the bone.

The bone marrow tissue is removed and studied. York will receive the anti-rejection medication he will need to take, and they will be monitoring that as well.

The treatment process is a whole new ballgame for him. York compares all the battery of tests that preceded the chemo and transplant “pre-game” and “practice.” Now he’s in the game and up to bat.

“It’s a grueling process,” York said. John is trying to focus on staying positive and knows what needs to be done for him to get better.

John J. York has been playing the beloved character, Mac Scorpio, who is the trusted chief of police on ‘General Hospital,’  since 1991.

York was on the verge of a major storyline on ‘ General Hospital,’ with Cody Bell (Josh Kelly). Mac has yet to find out that Cody is really his son. It is a secret Cody has been keeping, but Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna), Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco), and Sasha Corbin (Sofia Mattsson) all know.

Fans have been looking forward to the big reveal for well over a year. York is a very gifted actor and a wonderful person, and everyone is praying for his recovery.
