Batman was voiced by Kevin Conroy in a number of video games, an animated series from the 1990s, and other media. He was 66 years old. Conroy passed away on November 10 after “a brief battle with cancer,” according to an announcement made on Facebook by his co-star Diane Pershing (who played Poison Ivy in the animated series).

“He’s been ill for a while but he really put in a lot of time at the cons, to the joy of all of his fans,” said Pershing in the post. “He will be sorely missed not just by the cast of the series but by his legion of fans all over the world.” Conroy also portrayed Batman in the animated film The Killing Joke and the video game Multiversus. He also portrayed Thomas Wayne in the upcoming series Batman: Caped Crusader, though it is unknown if he will continue to play the character after his passing.

In a press release from Warner Bros. Discovery, Conroy’s other co-stars also expressed their admiration for him. Mark Hamill, who has played The Joker on numerous occasions, said only that “Kevin was perfection.” He continued, “He was one of my favourite people on the planet, and I loved him like a brother. He truly cared for the people around him – his decency shone through everything he did. Every time I saw him or spoke with him, my spirits were elevated.”

Following Conroy’s passing, casting and dialogue director Andrea Romano also expressed her admiration for him. “Kevin was far more than an actor whom I had the pleasure of casting and directing,” she said. “He was a dear friend for 30 plus years whose kindness and generous spirit knew no boundaries. Kevin’s warm heart, delightfully deep laugh, and pure love of life will be with me forever.”

He was my Batman, the voice I will forever associate with the caped crusader and one of my most beloved video game series and shows in the world. He was a personal hero of mine, and it is a great loss.

Rest in peace Kevin. He was 66.
