‘The Amazing Race’ spoilers find that viewers of the show can pinpoint the second it happened- when Caro broke up with Ray in her head, but back then the long-distance dating couple still had an entire race ahead of them.
However, only one country later, season 33 was put on a pandemic-related hiatus, now known as the world’s longest pit stop.
When the racers returned some 19 months since they were greeted at the mat in Scotland by a giant man with a 100lb boulder on his shoulder, fans were surprised to see only 5 out of the 9 active teams at the (re)start line in Switzerland.
Yet, Caro and Ray’s absence didn’t exactly have fans guessing why.

Caro and Ray were fan favorites when they appeared on Love Island USA and reality TV lovers were excited that the pair weren’t only still dating, but putting their relationship back in front of cameras as they raced around the world in hopes of winning $1 million.
However, things between the couple soured quickly. Caro, a native of Brazil had traveled extensively throughout her life, yet Ray didn’t quite share the same savvy.
After Ray bungled an extremely easy Road Block in London- Ray (and Penn Holderness) thought finding the clue was too easy to be true and continued to scavenge for it, even though it was in his hand the whole time.
Penn and partner- wife Kim later spoke about the flub during a side interview and found the humor in it all. Caro and Ray did not.
It was unsurprising then when fans learned the long-distance lovers broke up shortly after
However, breaking up with your partner doesn’t mean you can’t finish The Race, in fact, it would be downright entertaining for audiences. It turns out, though, there was a second reason the pair couldn’t return.
Caro’s U.S. visa had expired.
Caro left the U.S. for good in December of 2020, 9 months before filming resumed. Caro has continued traveling despite the pandemic lockdowns, visiting Sweden and her native home of Brazil.
Caro has said she enjoys traveling without the pressure of the Race. Don’t hold your breath while waiting for Ray and Caro to return.
