Dave Chapelle‘s new Netflix comedy special has gotten a lot of backlash from the LGBT community as being transphobic, even when Dave himself has claimed in the special to say that he is not going to be making anymore jokes about the LGBT community, specifically trans individuals, until “we can all laugh together”, which is casting a pretty broad net for an infinite amount of time, so its safe to say that he’s not going to he writing any jokes about LGBT people into his routines anytime soon.

Well, CEO of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, just doubled down, backing up Chapelle by saying, “We have a strong belief that content on screen doesn’t directly translate to real-world harm.” for the record in the special Chapelle recounts a tale about one of his friends on the comedy circuit who was trans.

A friend who took to Twitter to defend him and his brand of humor and subsequently got cancelled on Twitter by other trans users for their support of Chapelle. Sadly, Chapelle recounted that this particular friend died from suicide not long after.

He didn’t directly say that the hate they received on Twitter was the cause of their suicide, in fact he admitted that he “didn’t know what was going in their life”, but it does beg the question. However, even if it was, Twitter would not consider itself responsible for the actions of its users.

Ergo, Netflix seems to have adopted the same policy and it’s the policy that a lot of major conglomerates have. If a user chooses to weaponize content then that is the personal responsibility of that user and is a consequence of freedom of speech, but one that most that live in the US are willing to fight for.

The thing is about Chapelle’s special is that it was not inherently weaponized content, it was not meant to harm anyone, it was comedy, which is a largely subjective art form. Was it controversial? Yes. Could he offend a few people? Oh, definitely.

But Netflix seems to be totally on board with their decision to keep airing his special, and they’re not doing anything that any other big platform wouldn’t do. (Also if you were expecting Dave Chapelle to be cancelled after they continued making 13 Reasons Why for 2 seasons then clearly you don’t know Netflix.) It looks like this is the final word, we’ll keep you updated. Stay tuned!!!
