Jaclyn Moore, who has worked with Netflix for the past four years has decided to pull back from working with the streaming giant because of what they feel is Netflix’s decision to promote ‘transphobic content’ on their platform.
Moore was an executive producer on Dear White People, and even shared her transition story for Netflix’s Pride Week, but now after watching this special she has said on twitter that she finds it difficult to stand behind her previous claims that Netflix “cares about us and our community”.
Trans Producer Jaclyn Moore refuses to work with Netflix in light of new Dave Chapelle comedy special
To be fair she did say that she while she doesn’t actually let Chapelle off the hook for his comments, she holds Netflix more responsible than she does the Comedian himself, while giving some interesting insight into the way content is produced.
She said that a lot of the content is heavily monitored and that the streaming service has people constantly flagging and questioning its content. However, this is for scripted shows, which seems to be the only ones that she’s worked on and says she is unsure how it works for stand-up specials.
She went onto say that, “I don’t know who approved it, but what I do know is that there are not enough trans-people in these spaces because a trans-person would have said, ‘Are we aware of the implications’?”
She also said that Dave Chapelle should be allowed to say whatever he wants to say and she’s not trying to censor him, but that she should also be allowed to say whatever she wants about him. (Okay, fair.)
Although, not sure where Moore got the idea that Netflix was all that kind to the LGBT community simply because there is an unsubstantiated rumor going around that LGBT creators only get a limited time for their series to ‘hit’ before getting cancelled. Again, that is an unsubstantiated rumor and maybe Moore had a completely different experience while working with the company, but that is a rumor that has been floated around by some unverifiable sources.
However, at the end of the day it looks like comedy is just comedy, to Netflix, and to Chapelle’s credit he said that he wouldn’t be making anymore jokes about the LGBT community until he could be sure they were all laughing with him. Guess Moore didn’t hear that part. Stay tuned!
