‘Welcome to Plathville’ Spoilers reveal that Barry Plath decided to take sons Micah and Isaac out to the golf course in their town for a round of good old-fashioned Father-Son bonding. However. there was one presence that was missed among the Plath men, and that was Ethan’s.
Isaac was the first to comment on it in his confessional. He said that he thought that strides had been made in the relationship between his parents and Ethan, even though no words had been spoken between them at all for a year. He also said that he was willing to bet that if Ethan had hung out with them that day, that it would have been a good day.
‘Welcome to Plathville’: Ethan is missed
Micah kind of said the same thing, but he also said that a lot of the things that had happened between him and his parents that he had just had to let go of.
He said that he could hold onto waht they did to him grown up and ultimately not have a relationship with his siblings and “be miserable”, or he could choose to let things go and get past things and choose to have a relationship with his family and he chose the latter.
Honestly, it does sound like Micah has a good, sound head on his shoulders, but he’s also younger than Ethan and therefore has less to unpack, emotionally, than Ethan does.
The only thing that I’m not so sure about is how they both kind of theorized that Ethan would have a good time if he just hung out with them – maybe he would, but Ethan’s gone through a lot of personal turmoil lately in his marriage and it seems like his upbringing didn’t prepare him for the sheer amount of emotional work he would have to do as an adult.
Ethan needs acceptance too and I’m not sure that he’s going to find it if he just goes back to the Plath clan and assimilates as if nothing happened. It seems as if no matter what he does, Kim and Barry expected “better” out of him and might be expecting him to carry out more emotional labors if he does come back now – a reality that he may not be prepared for since he’s already under incredible emotional strain in his marriage.
