Say it isn’t so! Fans of Coronation Street, Emmerdale and the likes are not going to like this as there’s a new report that says British Soap Awards have been canceled for a second straight year due to the ongoing pandemic that has been the coronavirus.
The annual awards ceremony, which is hosted by Phillip Schofield, was expected to take place this summer, but the plans have now been scrapped. Here’s what you need to know.
This is the second year in a row that the ITV awards bash has had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. The awards were also cancelled last year at the height of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but even as restrictions ease amid the UK’s vaccination roll-out, organizers have decided it is not yet safe enough to hold the awards as hoped.
British Soap Awards Cancel 2021 Ceremony
One ITV spokesperson told the Daily Star, “As a result of the pandemic, and following careful consideration of the ongoing safety measures in place for both drama productions and live events, ITV can confirm that the British Soap Awards will not take place this year. We look forward to hosting the awards again, when it is safe to do so, and honoring the actors and shows that are so close to viewers’ hearts.”
An insider added, “‘The British Soap Awards is the highlight of the year for everyone in the soaps. t’s a chance for everyone to celebrate the hard work they’ve put in throughout the year. It’s also a chance for everyone to see each other and have a bit of a night out. The afterparty is always a lot of fun! But everyone understands why this decision has been made and supports the organizers.”
The last ceremony to air on TV was in 2019, when Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks won four awards including Best Soap. Coronation Street took home five awards on the night.
