A woman who is suspected to have killed her three children in Los Angeles said she did it to protect them from abuse.

On Thursday, Liliana Carrilo, 30, gave an interview from the jail to NBC affiliate KGET in Bakersfield, California, where she is currently being held.

Children, Joanna, 3; Terry, 2; and Sierra, 6 months, were found on the morning of April 10th, in an apartment. Carrillo had run away from the scene and was arrested that day after she carjacked someone.

KGET asked her what had happened to her children, to which she replied, “I drowned them. I wasn’t about to hand my children off to be further abused.”

Initially, police had said the children were stabbed. The Los Angeles County coroner has not said whether or not drowning was involved.

Carrillo plead not guilty Wednesday to the carjacking, attempted carjacking, and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent. She’s currently being held on $2 million bail, along with additional restrictions.

The children’s father has requested custody of the children claiming that Carrillo was delusional and refused to tell him where the children were. The request was filed just a month ago on March 1st.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Denton had tried to get the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services as well as the LAPD to get his children as he believed Carrillo was suffering mentally.

The children’s father, Erik Denton, was scheduled to visit the children just a day after they were found dead.

“I hugged them and I kissed them, and I was apologizing the whole time. I promised I would protect them,” Carrillo said.

What do you think? Should the police and child services had done more to work with the fatehr? Let us know in the comments below.
