You may have heard of a little game being played this Sunday, that’s right Super Bowl LV. Whether the Kansas City Chiefs or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers walk away with the prestigious trophy, history will be made.
That is because Sarah Thomas will be the first female official to don the black and white striped jersey as she takes the Super Bowl field.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Mom of three– two boys and one girl–Thomas said, “It’s just so meaningful. I never set out to be the first, at all, in any of this.”

Thomas who says she wasn’t necessarily working towards the Super Bowl as a goal, rather to simply be number one at her position does understands the impact she is having: “on not just my daughter, but young girls everywhere, women everywhere.” She then added, “And I have to add in young men and men too. I have two precious young men that I’m raising to be a partner with their spouse and respect that she’s a hardworking woman.”
She admitted that she may get a little misty-eyed as she takes the field in Florida on Sunday, as part of a seven-person on-field officiating team.
While Sarah Thomas is about to be the most talked about Down Judge in Super Bowl history, she’s not the only woman breaking the glass ceiling in sports.
There will be a total of 6 women involved in 2021’s Super Bowl including assistant coaches and athletic trainers. Then there is the NBA where this month the Orlando Magic hosted the Charlotte Hornets in a game with the usual three officials. But, for the first time ever, two were women. Also, last December, in soccer’s MLS Cup, Kathryn Nesbitt became the first woman to referee a championship match in North American men’s professional sports.
“This is remarkable,” Thomas acknowledged of her history making role, “I’m truly honored and humbled to be part of this year’s Super Bowl.”
Here’s hoping this is the first step in making a female Super Bowl down judge, a two or all female NBA official team or a female MLS Cup referee the most unremarkable thing in the world!
