El Secreto de Selena spoilers reveal that the Gran Final has arrived. This series has been a controversial look into a complicated and sad case that took one of the great voices of Tejano music. In the final episode, we see some indications of the alleged secret, but no real reveal. So what went down? Here’s what you need to know.

El Secreto de Selena: Conflicting interviews

The story begins with the famous interview Yolanda Saldívar (Damayanti Quintanar) granted to María Celeste Arrarás (Sofía Lama). The interview scenes are bizarre, with Yolanda once again selling the accident narrative while also refusing to answers several of María Celeste’s questions. She also repeatedly refers to Selena Quintanilla (Maya Zapata) as her daughter, and claims the singer called her “Mom”. María Celeste points out during the interview this is a bit odd, as is her referring to Selena in the present tense. She mentions that Yolanda’s apparent refusal to accept the truth of Selena being gone, as as well as other things doesn’t put her in a good light.

The interview is upsetting, obviously, for the Quintanilla family. Abraham Quintanilla (Jorge Zárate) decides to contact María Celeste in the aftermath to tell their side. María Celeste is more than happy to speak to him, and doesn’t use the interview to address any of the allegations made during the trial. Abraham is grateful for that, but María Celeste thinks there’s no reason for her to do so. No proof of any wrong-doing was provided, nor were charges filed. She does, however, want to know why they never followed through on calling the police on Yolanda after the theft was discovered. Abraham says he only threatened to call the cops to get her to go away. He was content to let her take off and live life elsewhere, working in another job.

El Secreto de Selena: Overall impressions

We honestly think this series wasn’t really all that bad, nor particularly disrespectful. It presented all the events that led to the tragic ending of Selena’s life. It delved into the strange contradictions that abounded, as well as making it clear that Yolanda was lying about a lot, and manipulating María Celeste. While Yolanda ultimately reveals a secret to her off the record (we don’t hear what it was), María Celeste concludes that nothing justifies what happened to Selena. She also is dimissive of this “secret” later. The series clears up the talk about Selena trying to run away, while also addressing Dr. Ricardo Martínez (Eduardo Santamarina). While he dimisses the running away theory, as well as saying their relationship could have become serious, this show even debunks any talk of actual affairs.

El Secreto de Selena: Odd ending

A strange, yet somewhat sweet ending shows a glimpse of what could have been. In the end, María Celeste concludes that Selena was a normal young woman who made some mistakes, as well as struggled with personal insecurities at times. However, her main failing was being too kind. She too easily trusted in people, which ultimately proved disastrous. During a scene where she’s giving a talk in celebration of the book’s 20th anniversary, she says this is a lesson to be learned from the tragedy. It’s always best to listen to our instincts and not trust blindly.

To close out the series, María Celeste muses on what could have been had Selena not opened that hotel room door on March 31st. The scene, instead, shows Selena returning to her car and driving away as Fotos y Recuerdos (Photos and Memories) plays. In a voice over, María Celeste talks about how she believes Selena would have won Grammys and accomplished any of her personal goals while still lighting everyone she encountered with her signature smile.
