‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers: Dominic Zamprogna is celebrating 15 years of playing the romantic hero and stand-up cop, Dante Falconeri. Zamprogna started on the show in June 2009.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Dante Is Sonny Corinthos’s Son
Dominic recently talked to Soap Opera Digest about his before his time playing Dante and how the audition came about,
“Oh man, I was about to turn 30, and I probably had the toughest year of my acting career prior to that. We had just bought a house, and my now wife, Linda, and I proceeded not to get hired for over a year. So I was delivering Meals on Wheels and auditioning and just trying to do whatever I could to stay afloat and renovating my home. That’s how I spent my days, Meals on Wheels, and drinking home-brew wine with my 75-year-old Italian neighbors who kind of adopted me. So it was a great time but also a really uncertain time.”
Soap Digest inquired about this first audition with the show.
“That year, 2009, was the beginning of things really picking up again. I was doing a recurring role on Smallville, and I was doing Stargate and a couple of TV movies and it was only April. And then my manager was like, ‘Hey, you wanna audition for a soap opera?’ I said I don’t know….I wasn’t really sure. And she was like, ‘Please! It’s my favorite soap, and they’ve been looking for this character for eight months. Just do it!”
The first significant story Dominic plays is about how he works as an undercover cop, trying to get the goods on Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard). Dante and Sonny weren’t yet aware that Dante was Sonny’s secret son with Olivia Quartermaine (Lisa LiCisero).
When Sonny found out that Dante was a cop who was building a case against the mafia boss, he shot Dante, and Olivia ran into the room screaming,
“You just shot your own son!”
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Dante Has Had Two Solid Romantic Partners
The story plays out beautifully, and Sonny and Dante eventually grow to have a real father-and-son relationship. Now, Dante is conflicted about his father’s business. He wants to be a good cop but also loves his father.
Another story the fans loved was Dante and Lulu Spencer’s (Emme Rylan) relationship. They were a popular super couple on the show for a long time until Lulu lapsed into a coma after a bomb (that Julian Jerome (William DeVry) planted under Cyrus Renault’s (Jeff Kober) orders) exploded at the Flaming Rib.
Lulu has been in a coma since November 2020, and she hasn’t been awake since. Dante is now in a serious relationship with Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco). The happy couple lives together and shares a blended family with Danny Morgan (Asher Antonyzyn), Scout Cain (Cosette Abinate), Rocco Falconeri (Finn Francis Carr), and Charlotte Cassadine (Scarlet Fernandez).
Zamprogna said that he learned from the best. Maurice Benard and Steve Burton, who plays Jason Morgan, helped show him the ropes and got him acclimated to acting on a soap.
Dominic feels he has a home and family with GH and is thankful for his time on the show. On his 15th anniversary playing Dante Falconeri, he said, “I’m very humbled and honored and very appreciative.”
