Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s damaged relationship mirrors Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson’s complicated friendship. Betrayal and jealousy caused problems for both pairs.
Princess Diana And Sarah Ferguson Were Childhood Friends
Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson were outsiders to the Firm when they wed their princes. Diana was married to Prince Charles in July 1981, and Sarah Ferguson tied the knot with Prince Andrew in July 1986.
Kate Middleton became Prince William’s bride in April 2011, as they have just celebrated their lace anniversary of 13 years. Meghan and Prince Harry were married in May 2018.
While Diana and Sarah were close childhood friends and grew up together, Kate and Meghan met in January 2017. Even though Kate warmly welcomed her sister-in-law, when Meghan looked at Kate, she saw green.
As the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate carried herself with all the grace and dignity of a true Princess. Her role in the royal family was to act as the future Queen, while Meghan’s role was to be the wife of the “Spare.” Ouch.
Meghan may not be Princess Diana, but both women felt like outsiders looking in. Princess Diana once said that Fergie’s ability to effortlessly glide into the royal family and gain approval left her “feeling like dirt.”
Meghan experienced backlash from the British tabloids, which embarrassed her and damaged her ego. Conversely, Diana was fragile and had difficulty with the tendency of the press to be unkind.
However, she retained global support as “The People’s Princess.” Diana was beloved for her empathy, humility, warmth, and natural beauty.
Kate has often been paralleled to Princess Diana, as both are renowned for their work with children, the kindness they display, and their sense of duty to the Commonwealth and the people they served.
Meghan and Sarah’s Respective Tell-All Oprah Interviews
Meghan, who only married into the royal family so that she could change the game and do things “her way,” struggled with fitting in and felt envious of Kate. She knew that she was number two behind Kate.
In January 2020, Harry and Meghan shocked the world when they stepped down from their royal duties and took off for the US. This move started a cascade of scandals that rocked the monarchy.
Throughout the years, Sarah and Diana were very close and spent much time together. In 1996, both Diana and Fergie ended their respective marriages. The Queen was left disillusioned and heartbroken.
Fergie wrote a tell-all memoir and promoted it with a history-making royal interview with Oprah Winfrey, which was controversial and spilled the tea about the royal family.
Diana had asked Sarah not to include any gossip about her in the book. But Sarah broke her word and inadvertently painted an unflattering portrayal of Diana.
“Diana helped me by giving me all her shoes and, less happily, her plantar warts,”
she quipped. It triggered the infamous fallout between them that lasted until Diana’s untimely death.
Much Like Diana And Sarah, Meghan And Kate May Never Make Up
We all know who else had a controversial interview with Oprah and wrote a tell-all memoir that included hurtful and malicious gossip. While Harry is the one who wrote “Spare,” Meghan’s influence is all over it.
Meghan Markle said that Kate Middleton made her cry due to a remark she allegedly made about Charlotte’s flower girl dress for Meghan’s wedding. She said that Kate demanded that the seamstress remake the dress. Harry claimed that when he returned to the palace, Meghan was on the floor, sobbing.
He alleged that the next day, Kate brought flowers and a card to apologize. However, Kate maintains to this day that Meghan is the one who made her cry.
Meghan is likely not telling the truth, as many of the palace staff were reduced to tears daily because of the Duchess bullying them. Some royal aides even quit over Meghan’s tantrums. In Harry and Meghan’s March 2021 interview with Oprah, Meghan also implied that the royal family was racist.
In her 1992 biography, Diana admitted that she was “terribly jealous of Fergie” and said that Fergie was “terribly jealous of me.” Diana was killed in a devastating car accident while being chased by the paparazzi in Paris in August 1997, and the two never made up.
As for Meghan and Kate, time will tell. It was said that Kate recently tried to extend an olive branch and invited Harry, Meghan, and their children to visit, but Meghan declined.
