Brendan Fraser is making a big comeback on the stage. Tuesday saw the release of the first image from Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” which features the actor as a 600-pound man. The movie, which is based on the 2012 play written by Samuel D. Hunter, tells the tale of Charlie (Fraser), a reclusive English professor who wants to get back in touch with his estranged 17-year-old daughter.

Fraser said of the role, “It’s gonna be like something you haven’t seen before.” He continued, “This is certainly far removed from anything I’ve ever done but not to be coy … I do know it’s going to make a lasting impression.”

In a statement, playwright Hunter said that adapting his play into a film was “a real labor of love” for him.

“This story is deeply personal and I’m very thankful it will have the chance to reach a wider audience. I’ve been a fan of Darren’s ever since I saw ‘Requiem for a Dream’ when I was a college freshman writing my first plays, and I’m so grateful that he’s bringing his singular talent and vision to this film.”

Since 2013‘s direct-to-DVD action film “Breakout,” Fraser will once again be at the top of the call sheet with the new film adaptation. Additionally, this is director Aronofsky’s first movie since the divisive “Mother!” in 2017.

We anxiously await Fraser’s performance and many are already contemplating that he may get a nod from the Academy. There’s no doubt that Fraser has a legion of fans and people who care about him, and in a role like this where he could really shine, this could easily be the one that gets him that coveted award.
