We all miss Stanford Blatch’s (Willie Garson) presence on “And Just Like That”, the Sex and the City reboot that no one actually asked for, but let’s face it, Stanford was one of the nicer things about it. Michael Patrick King, the creator of the series, revealed that originally, Stanford was supposed to be in all 10 episodes of the series.

King says that Stanford has always had a borderline career as a manager, and that they were going to explore the idea that this was not actually a career at all, but unfortunately, Garson died of pancreatic cancer before they could explore any of that.

“It’s the most threadbare writing I have ever done.” said King, of the story arc that wrote Stanford out of the show. In a hand-written letter to bestie, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) he told her that he was moving to Tokyo to focus on his career as a manager and that he was managing a teen tiktok star in Asia, subsequently he filed for divorce from his husband, Anthony Marentino (Mario Cantone) and just noped right the heck on out of dodge.

Was the storyline a bit rushed? Yes, but there’s only so much you can do when you have tragic, unforeseen circumstances like the death of Garson, and this seemed to be the only option that made sense.

King also says that there was no way that he could write a cute or funny way for Stanford to exit the show once Garson passed away and we can respect that. Given the suddenness and untimeliness of Garson’s demise, we can totally respect where the storyline involving Stanford went.

Above all, it was handled with a modicum of respect for the actor and the character and that’s something we honestly need more of on this show is respect for the characters as they were on the original show. We’re not asking for a whole bunch of change, just, a way for the characters to transition naturally into their more aged roles. But we’ll see where that lands during the season finale. Stay tuned!!!
