Youtuber Mr. Beast decided to go for broke and run for most tone-deaf content creator of the year award. How? By recreating Squid Games! Honestly, it looks like originally the idea was something that he would have come up with on his own anyway, because Mr. Beast is the type of guy that has held giveaways for money on his channel before.
However, this time he seems to have missed the point of the original series entirely, and that is something that fans of Squid Games and fans of his channel alike weren’t here for, so his entire idea earned him nothing but a ton of backlash for his efforts.
Mr. Beast recreates Squid Game to the tune of $2M
The entire premise behind Squid Game is that poor people basically compete to “entertain” rich people. They’re competing for money, but the whole series is a commentary on capitalist society.
Now, it’s not like Mr. Beast is the first youtuber to recreate a version of Squid Game, a lot of youtubers have done it, however, it was the production price tag that raised eyebrows among the fans. Apparently Mr.
Beast effort to recreate the series costed $2M, and it’s not just going to be done for fun, or among youtubers or celebrities where all proceeds go to a charity, no it seems that Mr. Beast will be getting actual fans to participate in this recreation.
He said on his social media, “Give me a month to gather 450 random people” instead of choosing from a pool of influencers like other videos imitating Squid Game have done, he’s decided to go full throttle with this.
And that’s not the only thing he asked his fans for. He also put up a limited time sweat shirt for 48 hours on his website and said 100 people who bought the sweatshirt would be entered into the games – meaning, essentially, they were paying Mr. Beast an entry fee to get into this “contest”.
Now, to be completely fair, he was honest up front and said that he would need help paying for the project, but some fans are having problems with that because he’s still literally doing what the show would do, which led some fans to believe that he was actually going to start ending lives with this video.
Yup, some fans actually believed that Mr. Beast was going to have random people get killed off for real in his video and not just be “eliminated” game show style.
Yike! No, last time we checked no one will be dying for the cause, murder is still murder and very much illegal – we’re pretty sure that any and all elmination methods will be on the up and up and completely humane and won’t involve people saying goodbye to their loved ones. Still, fans are not impressed by the price tag, or the premise. Stay tuned!!!
