Is this something that really needs to be said out loud? Parents are being criticized for putting their kids in “Squid Game” inspired tracksuits, and yes schools are banning them as kids are now mimicking the chilling show during their recess time. Here’s what you need to know.
Everyone is grabbing whatever retro green track suits and white Van slip-on shoes as it’s the biggest Halloween costume of this year. But principals at three New York elementary schools outside Syracuse are cracking down on “Squid Game”-related talk and play after students were mimicking the violent series at recess.
Stop Putting Your Kids In ‘Squid Game’ Costumes For Halloween
Emails were sent to parents of the roughly 1,500 students who attend Mott Road, Fayetteville and Enders Road elementary schools to remind parents that this is not appropriate and that this is not okay.
“We have observed that some students at recess have been playing a version of [“Squid Game”] … which is intended for mature audiences, ages 16 and older,” the email from Mott Road Elementary’s principal said. “Due to concerns about the potential violent nature of the game, it is inappropriate for recess play or discussion at school.”
“Squid Game,” the massively popular dystopian Korean drama, which was written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, is about hundreds of cash-strapped contestants accept an invitation to compete in children’s games for a tempting prize, but the stakes are deadly.
In the series, each character competing in the games has a problem at home. In one challenge, the characters are told to run towards a disturbing mannequin after it calls out ‘green light’ and must stop when ‘red light’ is shouted. If caught moving, the player is shot dead.
Yet, Common Sense Media, which rates shows based on their age appropriateness, says that the violence on “Squid Game” is “very intense.”
“Characters are systematically tortured and killed for the sadistic pleasure of a game master. Adults have sex, and there are threats of sexual violence: Women are grabbed by the hair and beaten,” the website notes. “Themes concerning the highs one gets from gambling, winning, or conning money are a main focus.”
