Hwang Dong-hyuk may have a blockbuster show on an enormous streaming platform but hasn’t hit the ‘jackpot’. Despite Netflix’s ‘Squid Games’ becoming a cultural phenomenon with record views, it hasn’t become a cash cow for the Korean show’s creator. Hwang was revealed that record-breaking show has provided enough to ‘put food on the table.’
“It’s not like Netflix is paying me a bonus,” Hwang said. He also pointed out that while ‘Squid Game’ recently passed ‘Bridgerton’ to become Netflix’s most-watched show ever, the streaming platform is still paying him the amount they worked out in the original contract.
Amount of Money Netflix’s Viral ‘Squid Game’ Series Made For Creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk Revealed and It’s Shocking!
‘Squid Game’ has been viewed by 142 million households and upped Netflix’s subscribers by over 4 million! The show is currently worth around $900 million.
“It was physically, mentally, and emotionally draining,” Hwang said. It was also reportedly so stressful that he lost six teeth. “I kept having new ideas and revising the episodes as we were filming so the amount of work multiplied. If there was a survival game like these, in reality, I wondered, would I join it to make money for my family? I realized that, since I was a filmmaker, I could put my own touch to these kinds of stories so I started on the script.”
Hwang also joked that if there’s a season two there’s a chance he could become as rich as ‘Squid Game’s’ winner.’ However, at the moment it’s unconfirmed whether there will be a second season or not. With the success of the first one, I think it’s highly probably they will want to capitalize further on the project and move forward. Hopefully, this time around Hwang can sign a larger contract.
