Maurice Benard’s State of Mind has been a great Sunday ritual for a lot of people. The actor, who plays Sonny Corinthos on ‘General Hospital’, speaks with fellow soap stars about mental health, their personal life challenges, acting, and more. He’s also added athletes, mental health advocates, and others to the conversation. Let’s talk about how he’s shaking it up and why we love it.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind shakes it up
We had a treat recently with Maurice Benard’s State of Mind featured Max Tomlin of Max updates GH. The young fan was a fun watch and a refreshing change. You can read more about that right here on DSD. However, this wasn’t the only change he put out there.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind takes requests
For a while now, fans have been writing in with their personal wish lists for guests on the show. Some have already appeared, but others are yet to take the invite—or have their episode air. Even Britney Spears has been suggested as a guest. However, one of the more unique suggestions was for characters to appear. And there was one in particular that just took the challenge.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind meets fiction
So, Maurice Benard’s State of Mind usually goes on YouTube every Sunday. However, this week gave fans a bonus when he put a short episode up on his Instagram account. The guest? None other than Nikolas Cassadine (Marcus Coloma). Yes, Benard interviewed the character of Nikolas and it is one awesome conversation.
One thing that had us laughing was Benard’s mispronouncing of his guest’s name. Which Nikolas corrected each time. When the talk turned to other characters in Port Charles, Nikolas seemed especially agitated about Sonny. Who, by the way, he called the father of half of Port Charles. We seriously cracked up at that.
However, Benard always digs deep—even when he’s talking to a character. He ended up suggesting that perhaps Nikolas’ apparent animosity toward this Sonny Corinthos guy might stem from a little jealousy. We think he might be on to something! After all, Nikolas did point out how Sonny seems to get away with a lot.
This was a great mini-episode and can be seen here.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind gets creative
It’s not always easy to get a guest on State of Mind. Benard has mentioned some people have declined the invite, and we can understand why. The conversations can get very personal and heavy fast. So, we can see where some people might not be willing to be so vulnerable on camera.
By talking with a person’s character instead, that problem is solved. We get an entertaining view, and possibly some deep thoughts. After all, these characters have definitely been through a lot. So, if desired, Benard and the character can still discuss important topics and keep his advocacy mission going. We hope we see more of these moments soon.
