Maurice Benard’s State of Mind started off with a heavy moment this week that the host was so impressed by. That moment came from a story about guest Freddie Stevenson’s past. Turning to the world of sports this week, the show offered something a little different than normal. Let’s take a look at some highlights and what people had to say.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind: The guest
So, this week we had a guest from the world of Football. Benard described him as a former FSU Standout and NFL free agent. Stevenson was on the show to talk about early struggles and his book, “Trials to Triumph.”
Benard is apparently a fan, because he had glowing words for the book in the description and pointed out there was a certain part of the story he’d wanted to talk about. Let’s talk about the story and another highlight.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind: Highlights
So, Stevenson talked about struggling as a child. It was so bad at one point, his mother took them to a fast food place to get a dollar burger. Which she then cut into pieces and handed to each of her children without taking any for herself. This is the moment that apparently stood out the most for Benard, who described his mother as an angel for being willing to go without any to make sure the kids had some food.
This was kind of an interesting moment in itself, as Benard had been touched by that part of the book and had wanted to talk about it, but Stevenson told the story before he could even ask.
Another great highlight of the conversation was when he spoke about his father’s legal issue and how hard it was for his father to get work after he was released from jail. Publix was apparently the company that finally gave him a chance, which led to an interesting place.
As an example of how important compassion and getting a second chance is, Stevenson shared his father is now a Pastor with his own church. We love how the situation turned out, and think that’s a really important part of the conversation these days, because who doesn’t need a little compassion and understanding? Or to be given a chance to turn things around?
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind: Reaction
Check out the conversation to see Stevenson speak about his football career as well as dealing with injury, as well as anxiety and depression. He also discussed what kept him going as he recovered from that injury. It was a great watch, and the fans apparently agree.
One viewer said, “His story has given me so many chills. He is such an amazing inspiration!!! Thank you Maurice for having him on.”
Another said, “’ve come to love these conversations. Everybody has a story and it’s encouraging to see the testimonies of those who endured emotional difficulties, and have come out on the other side. My church had a healing conference over this past week and I gleaned that we all need healing. Whether is physical, emotional, mental or spiritual. We all need healing and part of the healing process is first recognizing and admitting you need to heal. Thank you Maurice for being so transparent and vulnerable. Thank you Freddie for your story and congratulations on your success. I just bought your book on Kindle. I’m looking forward to reading it.”
We couldn’t agree more and it’s part of why we love these weekly chats. Stay tuned to see who’s next on the guest list.
