While it’s certainly normal for a parent to monitor the texts and calls that their teenager gets on a daily basis, it’s not normal for a parent to monitor the texts and calls that their already adult child gets on a daily basis.

Yet, that’s exactly what Britney Spears went through as a new Hulu documentary says that her father Jamie Spears basically controlled every aspect of her life. Here’s what you need to know.

According to reports, a security company hired by Jamie Spears has monitored Britney’s phone ever since she was put under a court-sanctioned conservatorship back in 2008.

In the new Hulu doc, “Controlling Britney Spears, “Alex Vlasov, a former BlackBox Security employee who said he worked with the singer’s team for nearly nine years, said the company “mirrored” the pop singer’s phone on an iPad by logging in to her iCloud account.

Vlasov also said that he was asked to encrypt some of Spears’ text conversations so they could be sent to her father and an employee of a business management firm he had hired.

“Edan Yemini, a former bodyguard for Spears and one of the agents working with him came into my office and handed me the audio recording device and a USB drive and asked me to wipe it,” Vlasov, who worked at the security firm from 2012 to 2021, said in a teaser for the documentary.

“I had them tell me what was on it. They seemed very nervous and said that it was extremely sensitive, that nobody can ever know about this, and that’s why I need to delete everything on it so there’s no record of it.”

Vlasov said the exchange “raised so many red flags,” adding, “I did not want to be complicit in whatever they were involved in, so I kept a copy because I didn’t want to delete evidence.”

“The New York Times Presents: Controlling Britney Spears” premieres Friday at 10 p.m. ET on FX and Hulu.
