Simone Biles got a lot of flack for allegedly ‘quitting’ the Olympics, when she in fact didn’t, she came back for the beam event final and ended up scoring a bronze medal, a feat that she did not expect to accomplish. She really wasn’t after a medal after initially withdrawing from the other Olympic competitions, rather she just wanted to finish what she started, and she finished on a good note.
While no one has ever heard of ‘the twisties’ before, and you probably wouldn’t outside of a gymnastic setting, everyone was kind of making fun of Simone for it and making fun of her for withdrawing for her mental health, even when she maintained that during that time that her coaches and teammates had seen her during practice and had seen that there was no way that she could perform the stunts safely. Simone even said so herself.
Simone Biles’ secret heartbreak
However after the beam competition, at a press conference we found out a secret heartbreak that the gymnast was going through, and that was the unexpected passing of her beloved Aunt on her father’s side. No one knew that she had gotten the call at the beginning of the week that her aunt had died.
She didn’t say anything about it, perhaps because it was too emotional a topic for her and she wanted to keep her head on straight so that she could be able to compete on beam in the final round, or maybe it was because of what people were saying online.
That she was weak-minded, that it looked bad that she pulled out, that she had let down Team USA, disappointing her teammates, but if someone in your family had unexpectedly passed away, and say that person was an intrinsic part of your life and you deeply loved them, could you comprehend how to jump and twist without hurting yourself?
Could you block that phenomenal grief out of your mind, grief that probably told you that you should have been there for them in their last moments, while you went and competed on a world stage?
So, before we judge Simone Biles, we need to realize that everyone handles grief differently and sometimes that means that you have to take time for yourself, and you have to take yourself out of a situation that could prove detrimental to your health, in this case both physical and mental, in order to survive.
I think it’s time we gave this poor girl a break and let her live, and heal properly. She said that she wouldn’t exactly say no to another Olympic games and if that be the case, we’ll be right there for her. Stay tuned!!!
