Simone’s got nothing to worry about, because Michelle’s got her back. The former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama made it pretty clear that she is still on Team Simone Biles, despite her decision to quit the Tokyo Olympics.
The pint-sized gymnast removed herself from the team final following one rotation on the vault. She cited her mental health as the reason when speaking to the media following the competition.
Shortly after Biles’ announcement was made, Obama tweeted, “Am I good enough? Yes, I am. The mantra I practice daily. We are proud of you and we are rooting for you. Congratulations on the silver medal, Team USA!”

The USA Gymnastics said in a statement on Wednesday, “After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games, in order to focus on her mental health. We wholeheartedly support Simone’s decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many.”
Meanwhile, Jade Carey, who finished ninth in qualifying, will take Biles’ place in the all-around. The gymnast did not qualify because she was the third-ranking American, behind Biles and Sunisa Lee.
The top 24 athletes compete in the finals, but only two athletes per country are allowed to advance. arey will join USA’s Suni Lee, who qualified third.
Biles says she stepped away for mental health reasons and that she would decide “one day at a time” about how to proceed with the Games. As of press time, USA Gymnastics has not said if she plans to compete in any other individual event finals.
