Maurice Benard’s State of Mind had a returning guest recently. Kin Shriner, who place Scott Baldwin on General Hospital was on a little while back.
During the chat, he spoke about OCD and gave Benard some insight into the condition. This time, he shared some personal stories while going deeper into the topic. Let’s take a look at a few highlights of the chat.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind welcomes back…
We loved Shriner’s last chat on Maurice Benard’s State of Mind. This time was no exception. The thing that struck us most about the chat was the way the actor reminded us so much of Scott in some ways. He definitely puts a lot of himself into the character, and it was fun to see the rapport between him and Benard.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind gets real
Mental Health still has some stigma and unknowns about it. Benard’s purpose in the show is to shine a light on that, and he’s definitely helped bring a lot of awareness. Tackling OCD is another great step, as there’s still some confusion at times over the condition.
Shriner said it perfectly as he revealed the little things about OCD that people might not thing of. When it’s mentioned, a lot of people might think of someone washing their hands a lot. Constantly cleaning surfaces, that sort of thing. But he mentioned a big part of it is responsibility.
For instance, he talked about how someone with OCD might get paranoid they’d hit someone/something on the street, even if they didn’t and they might not be a good reason to think you did. But they’ll obsess about it, or even turn around to check. You constantly have that sense of being responsible for this or that.
In another case, someone might obsessively check to make sure the door is locked, or that they didn’t leave something on. He spoke about the importance of training yourself not to give into those impulses, because when you do, you let OCD win.
He also spoke about how the condition is not really something you can “cure” with meds or other treatment. The most effective thing is exposing oneself to the things they’d obsess over and train themselves to not listen to the nagging voice inside.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind goes deep
Anyone who’s followed Maurice Benard’s State of Mind know it can get deeply personal. This conversation was no exception. Shriner opened up about the death of his parents, why he felt gypped, and how he found parental figures in the GH family. Check out the chat to see more about OCD, his story, and what these two had to say about each other.
