Maurice Benard’s State of Mind featured a guest we think the actor and host was really excited to speak to. We’ll tell you why in a minute. For us, this conversation with Mia St. John was moving and had us taking a minute to process the whole thing. Let’s talk about some highlights and what led up to the release of this chat.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind: Reflections and returns
First, we didn’t have a guest on the show last week. Instead Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos, General Hospital) released a short solo video. In it, he spoke about the beginnings of Maurice Benard’s State of Mind, as well as showed up the space he uses for the show now. Check out the video below, because it has a cool moment of synchronicity that had Benard surprised.

The other video was released shortly before his chat with St. John. He documented his first time back in a boxing ring since the lockdowns that marked most of 2020. It was a nice glimpse into his path back to normal, and he made a point of stressing the importance of physical well-being to one’s mental well-being.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind welcomes Mia St. John
One of the reasons Benard was so excited for the chat was the fact he’s a huge boxing fan. But beyond that, there were a lot similarities between the two and their journeys. He laid out all those reasons at the beginning of the video before getting to backstory and career.
A couple of things stood out to us. One was the fact she made a seemingly impossible dream a reality. St. John spoke about how she’d started in Martial Arts and was inspired to get into boxing later on.
While most didn’t think that was possible, she pushed ahead and sent her record, a letter, and picture to Don King. Why? Because when she was a child, she was taught your thoughts create your reality.
So, she went ahead and followed where her dreams took her without letting the practical reasons why this wouldn’t happen enter her mind. It turned into a successful career, so we think that’s a great lesson.
The other thing that really struck us was when she spoke of her losses along the way. When she spoke of her son and Kristoff St. John’s passing, you could feel the emotion from both Benard and Mia.
We have to admit we got a bit teary here. Especially when she shared one of the final things Kristoff told her about their deceased son.
It’s a moving, inspiring interview and we think she and Benard are strong, effective voices in the Mental Health community. Check out the video about to see these moments, as well as learn about her own personal struggle with anxiety and substance abuse.
