Justin Timberlake has made his support of his ex-girlfriend, Britney Spears public only hours after the pop-star made her impassioned plea in court, asking the judge to end her controversial conservatorship.
In a lengthy social media thread, Timberlake implored all to support Spears, saying “what’s happening to her is just not right. No woman should ever be restricted from making decisions about her own body.”
Justin Timberlake Shows His Support for Britney Spears
This comment came after Spears divulged in court that she has been forced on to medications and currently has an IUD implanted in her. “I’m not able to get married or have a baby, I have an [IUD] inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant,”
Spears told the judge. “I wanted to take the IUD out so I could start trying to have another baby. But this ‘so-called team’ won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have any more children.”
The ’so-called team’ Spears referred to in her testimony is headed by her father, Jamie Spears, who has had conservatorship over his daughter since 2008, after her public breakdown.
Timberlake went on to disparage anyone holding another against their will and believes it to be unconscionable that Spears needs to be granted permission to access the millions of dollars she has “worked so hard for.”
On behalf of the singer/actor and his wife, Jessica Biel, Timberlake continue the Twitter thread to say, “Jess and I send our love, and our absolute support to Britney during this time. We hope the courts, and her family make this right and let her live however she wants to live.”
Timberlake had issued an apology earlier this year when the Framing Brittney Spears documentary came out, highlighting the restrictive conservatorship and the the role Timberlake played in both the media perception of Spears, and his contribution to her mental health woes.
Timberlake expressed regret for his “missteps” that he says contributed to “a system that condones misogyny.”
Timberlake and Spears were in a highly publicized relationship in the late ’90s and early 2000’s when they were catapulted into global superstardom as teen icons. The pair were tabloid magnets with Spears, hyper-sexualized by the media being portrayed as unfaithful.
She was slut-shamed by the press and blamed solely for the breakup of the ‘golden couple’. At the time, Timberlake did not refute this and even released the song ‘Cry me a River’ about the starlet.
Spears fans everywhere wait with baited breath to hear the outcome of this court hearing.
