Prince William is certainly not holding back. The Duke of Cambridge has released a statement to the official inquiry into the circumstances that led up to the famous BBC Panorama interview between Martin Bashir and his mother Princess Diana back in 1995. William criticized the “deceitful way” the interview was obtained. Here’s what you need to know.
According to reports, the independent inquiry – by retired judge Lord Dyson – found that interviewer Martin Bashir acted in a “deceitful” way and faked documents to obtain his interview. After an inquiry found the BBC “fell below its standards,” Prince William said he was “most saddened” Diana never learned she had been deceived.
Prince William Rips The BBC A New One Following Investigation Of Martin Bashir’s Interview With Princess Diana
The Duke of Cambridge described the findings of the inquiry as “deeply concerning” adding that the BBC’s failures “contributed significantly to her fear, paranoia and isolation, that I remember from her final years with her.”
Prince William said in a new clip: “BBC employees lied and used fake documents to obtain the interview with my mother, made lurid and false claims about the royal family which played on her fears and fueled paranoia. They displayed woeful incompetence when investigating complaints and concerns about the program and were invasive in their reporting to the media, and covered up what they knew from their internal investigation.”
Prince William said that the way that the interview was obtained “substantially influenced.” He also says that it made things far worse for his parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, and their relationship.
He said: “It is my view that the deceitful way the interview was obtained substantially influenced what my mother said. The interview was a major contribution to making my parents relationship worse and has since hurt countless others. It brings indescribable sadness to know that the BBC’s failures contributed significantly to her fear, paranoia and isolation, that I remember from her final years with her.”
Prince William added: “What saddens me most is that if the BBC had properly investigated the complaints and concerns first raised in 1995, my mother would have known that she had been deceived. She was failed not just by a rogue reporter but my leaders at the BBC who looked the other way rather than asking the tough questions.”
The BBC has since written to apologize to Princes William and Harry, as well as the Prince of Wales and Diana’s brother Earl Spencer.
