For Prince William, there’s more important things right now than a red carpet ceremony, like being with his family to mourn his beloved grandfather, Prince Philip. The Duke of Cambridge canceled his 2021 BAFTAs appearance following Prince Philip’s death last Friday. Here’s what you need to know.

As many royal fans know, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton have been fixtures of the BAFTA Awards red carpet for several years and Prince William has very personal ties to the show and to the BAFTA organization, of which he’s served as president since 2010. But this year the royal couple is skipping the festivities in order to mourn with their family.

“In light of The Duke of Edinburgh’s passing, The Duke of Cambridge will no longer be part of BAFTA programming this weekend,” the BAFTAs explained in a statement, according to the Hollywood reporter.  “Our thoughts are with the Royal Family, to whom we offer our deepest sympathy at this time.”

It’s been noted that decades before William took on a leadership role at BAFTA, the Duke of Edinburgh became the organization’s first president in 1959.

In a statement issued following his death, BAFTA chronicled Prince Philip’s devotion to the arts.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, whose close association with the Academy spanned over 60 years,” a part of the statement reads. “The Duke occupies a special place in the Academy’s history and will be missed enormously. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family, to whom we offer our deepest sympathy.”

All senior members of the royal family are expected to attend Prince Philip’s funeral at Windsor Castle amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with a service at St. George’s Chapel — where Harry and Meghan wed in 2018.
