It looks like #45 has lowered the boom on tiktok and made good his threat. The Trump administration says that they wouldn’t accept any deal that left the chinese company, Bytedance, with majority control, and even though an American company, Oracle, has offered to enter into a deal with Bytedance the handles the privacy and security of their servers, that’s not good enough because Bytedance still has the majority of control.
The Trump administration says that this is because they don’t trust the chinese government and think that the government could use the data to censor anything that’s sensitive to them and possibly use it to spy on american private citizens, but the tiktok servers, are not subject to the control of the chinese government because they are already not located in China.
So what’s the big deal, then?Â
Your guess is as good as mine, to be quite honest. The Oracle deal looks to be the best deal that they have. It would allow bytedance to control the majority of the platform, which its doing just fine at, but it would allow for an american company to be in charge of the security and any privacy issues.
Which, isn’t that what they were concerned about in the first place? If it all comes down to security and privacy then having an American company handle all of that should be an acceptable compromise to the situation at hand. Apparently not to this administration, though.
So come this Sunday, users in the US will no longer be able to download tiktok on any of the app stores. Now, that doesn’t mean you can’t surf tiktok. The real hard ban comes on Nov. 12th, when it will be illegal to transmit data of any kind via tiktok servers.
That’s when all of the fun shuts down and everyone has to go to other social media platforms like instagram, twitter, and youtube. I know a lot of the parents out there are going to be happy that tiktok is getting banned, but honestly… I’m rather disappointed.
I guess it’s just proof that while I may be a millenial of the Oregon Trail generation, I’m still young. I know a lot of people have made their living making tiktoks and while arguably they can always go to other social media platforms to do what they do, they would not have gotten the attention to do so if it weren’t for this app.
Youtube is overrun with content creators and their censorship has now driven people to other platforms. (Hence why a lot of the more risque creators have chosen to go to onlyfans) Also not everyone has the production value for a successful youtube channel, with tiktok, you didn’t need it.
National Security issues aside, TikTok is fun, it’s a good time waster for when you’re stuck somewhere and just need something to watch while you’re killing time. I’m disappointed by this ban because I was just beginning to enjoy it.
Maybe there’ll be an American company that will develop an app that will be similar to tiktok. Supposedly instagram reels is amazingly like it but doesn’t have any of the alleged security issues that tiktok does, but reel is not its own app, it’s part of instagram itself and unless you click on find, you can’t even get to instagram reels.
I haven’t seen it for download in the app store. I have seen IGTV though, which I do have, but in my opinion that app is totally different. Either way… maybe something else will come along. So long, Tiktok.
