YouTube Rolls Out Its TikTok Competitor, YouTube Shorts

Along with Instagram’s Reels, it looks like YouTube is joining in on the short dance clip craze with their own version of TikTok called YouTube Shorts. Here’s what you need to know.

According to new reports, YouTube has officially announced the debut of Shorts, which just like TikTok, is a short-format video feature nestled comfortably in the app. Each Short is about 15 seconds or less. The company is currently launching an early beta in India.

Music is available via an “in-product music picker feature,” a YouTube spokesperson told The Verge. The picker “currently has 100,000s of tracks, and we’re working with music artists, labels and publishers to make more of their content available to continue expanding our catalog.”

YouTube has more than 2 billion monthly users, noting “we want to enable the next generation of mobile creators to also grow a community on YouTube with Shorts.”

“We actually have introduced stories on YouTube and we’ve actually seen our creators really engage with the stories,” YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki said in an interview with NBC News recently. “That would be an example of really short-form content. So we will definitely continue to innovate in all the different format sizes, including really short-form video.”

While the company has recently been highlighting videos that only last a few seconds long in its mobile app, Shorts takes things to the next level by offering video creation tools akin to those found on TikTok and Reels. While Instagram has never really been seen as a video entertainment-first platform, YouTube is, giving the app more of an edge in the hopes that it will make a mark on the TikTok-dominate market.
