The CW ‘Riverdale’ spoilers finds that recently, Vanessa Morgan who plays Toni Topaz on the hit CW show Riverdale called out its writers for their portrayal of black characters on the show. You go Vanessa. She said that the way they are treated in storylines is deplorable, that they are just sidekicks and nothing more. This I will agree with completely.
In season 2, Toni Topaz was ship-teased with Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) but when everyone reacted with revulsion and disgust because they felt that he would never cheat on his high school sweetheart Betty Cooper (Lilli Reinhart) then suddenly it was discovered that Toni actually preferred girls. Eventually she would go on to be with Cheryl Blossom and become a series regular in season 3, but you have to admit that her character has been kind of a sidekick. Once she became Cheryl’s girlfriend, Toni’s entire world revolved around Cheryl, even when everything in that world was unhealthy and damaged. (Covering for her while keeping her brother’s corpse? That’s either deep love or deeply enabling and the way it was written was definitely the latter.)

Cheryl also commented on how that she was basically pulling double duty on the show as a double minority, meaning a black castmate and being one of the LGBT community and how she was paid the least. Her castmate Asha Bromfeld who played the drummer for the Pussycats backed her up saying, “Don’t even get me started on how Riverdale treated the Pussycats. We had so much more to add than just standing in the background adding sass to a storyline.” Can we get an AMEN in this house?!
Indeed, the storylines involving the Pussycats were very lackluster and they usually revolved around music. Okay that’s fine considering Archie originally wanted to do music and would collab with the Pussycats as well from time to time but when the show was consumed by this murder mystery drama the Pussycats were tossed aside and practically never used again in favor of characters that we didn’ t know or couldn’t care less about. (Chic, anyone? It’s not like he mattered in the end anyway, that storyline was a complete cop-out!) You can’t tell me that the Pussycats would not have had something to contribute other than one of them being one of Archie’s flavors of the week.
I stand with both if these girls and hopefully the writing team will start to realize that they need to put thought into and work with the talent that they actually have before they go off on another wild tagent storyline. Hopefully season 5 of Riverdale will make a valid attempt to return to the glory of season 1 where we had interesting characters and an interesting plot and maybe this time the least explored characters will get a chance to come out and play. After all, Riverdale claims to be the most ‘woke’ show out there, well maybe its time to put their money where their mouth is. Thing is, I don’t know if they are up for the challenge yet. Guess we’ll have to stay tuned!!!
