Netflix True Crime reveal we’re getting into more Netflix true crime with the limited docu-series Evil Genius: The True Story of America’s Most Diabolical Bank Heist. That title is a mouthful. This series covers what is usually called the Pizza Bomber Case from 2003.

Netflix True Crime: The Pizza Bomber Case!

On August 28, 2003, pizza delivery driver Brian Wells became the focal point of a bank robbery. Now that will grab local interest. It might even end up as national news. What really made this story bigger was that he had a bomb strapped around his neck.

Now there’s some mystery to this robbery. The danger spiked. Wells’ story ended when the bomb exploded. The investigation would reveal others involved in the robbery but there are still questions in the case. As you may have guessed, the more people involved in the planning of a crime, the more versions and parts of a story you’ll get if they turn.  The investigation revealed a number of things that really muddy the waters for everyone involved.

Netflix True Crime: Evil Genius- The True Story of America’s Most Diabolical Bank Heist

This docu-series kind of picks up where public interest ended. When things like this happen, there’s interest for a while before everyone either moves on or something else happens. The interest really only lasts as long as the news reports on it.

After that, it’s up to the public to continue following and digging for developments. That’s the crux of Evil Genius as filmmaker Terry Borzillieri strikes up a correspondence with inmate Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong. She was imprisoned for her role in Wells’ death and the robbery along with two other conspirators.

Borzillieri attempts to get more out of Marjorie who mainly sticks to her court version of events. Via interviewers and investigation, more is revealed about the planning. A web of who knows who and how forms and the narrative surrounding Brian Wells becomes muddled. There exist two main camps in regards to Wells: either he was a victim who was forced into the robbery or he was in on the robbery and it went wrong.

There’s evidence that supports both theories. Evil Genius also digs in Diehl-Armstrong’s background and a little into her conspirators. It’s another onion case with many layers to it. It’s a textbook Netflix true crime docu-series and even has an unexpected witness to Brian Wells’ character towards the end.

Netflix True Crime: Verdict- 9/10 (High Recommended)

Evil Genius has a lot going on and it builds to things pretty quickly. The anchor of this documentary is Terry Borzillieri and Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong’s phone calls.   It makes sense that Evil Genius focuses a bit on Diehl-Armstrong’s early life and how she became the person involved in a convoluted bank robbery plan and the overly involved death of another human. That will always be an important part of a true crime series: how did everyone come together for this? How could they think of this plot?

Trust me, the plot isn’t elaborate but it’s very involved and even includes Brian Wells having to collect clues for keys to unlock the bomb along his route. As the docu-series continues, we see Diehl-Armstrong’s downfall behind bars. Her journey through life is winding one.

I really recommend Evil Genius. It’s a respectful, strong dive into the Pizza Bomber Case that will have you hitting “Yes” to continue after three episodes.
