Dance Moms cast member and youtube sensation Jojo Siwa (those of you with young children will recognize her from the shelves of Walmart where her merchandise is everywhere) came out of the closet a few weeks ago and announced that she is part of the LGBT community.
We’re happy for her, sometimes discovering one’s truth takes years, and sometimes it happens overnight. Fortunately for Jojo, her journey, so far, seems to have been a pretty positive and supportive one.

This week, however, she made another announcement, and that is that she has a girlfriend! In a recent Instagram post, she said that after a year of calling this girl her best friend, that she can now say that she has a girlfriend and that she’s never been happier!
Again, we’re so proud for Jojo that this has been a happy, supportive journey and that she’s having a good time in life. So many people don’t have good, supportive journeys in life, we’ve still got a long way to come when it comes to universal acceptance.
However, there seems to be no real backlash for Jojo, unlike when Ellen came out of the closet in the ’90s (does any 90’s kid remember that?) no one has said much, and Jojo’s audience seems to have accepted her new identity without much of a fuss.
This can only mean that society’s changing toward a more progressive future and that can only be a good thing. I was afraid we’d have burnings of Jojo merch outside Walmarts everywhere but so far… nothing doing on that front. Granted, we’ve had a lot more on our minds these days that isn’t Jojo related but hey, one progressive step forward is still a very good thing.
