‘Welcome to Plathville’ Spoilers finds that we’ve always rooted for Ethan Plath and his wife Olivia. They were basically each other’s high school sweethearts, got married at the tender age of 21 and were each other’s first everything. But right fromt the get-go, you could tell that there was a disconnect between them.
Ethan, though a sheltered, homeschooled country boy, seemed pretty content with his life and had never really thought to look outside the way his parents lived for any sort of happiness. Granted, he’s a male, and in fundamentalist Christian culture, men basically have all the fun.
‘Welcome to Plathville’: Will Ethan and Olivia split up?
Olivia, however, was a rebel. She found the culture repressive and even though she’s no rockstar, by Fundamentalist Standards she is a wild child, so it’s easy to see where Ethan was attracted to her. Even though by every other definition of the world, Olivia is… still pretty darn conservative, just not… Duggar-level conservative.
Still, Olivia wanted out of the culture, she was starving for freedom and independence and saw marrying Ethan as a way out. Her own family left the cult after her Dad saw the light and apologized to his entire family for putting them through years of not only religious trauma, but alcohol abuse.
Now that they’re a couple of years into the marriage, it’s easy to see the divide that’s happening. Ethan was happy before and even willing to give it all to work on this marriage, but he’s not good at talking about his problems at all.
Olivia is a talker, and therapy has helped her process what she’s been through, but Ethan says that therapy has not helped him and he views it as going and talking to a stranger about his problems which… is kind of valid, considering the culture he came out of.
However recently separation and divorce has been mentioned. The couple that we were rooting for seems to be floundering, and Olivia thinks its best that they get out of Cairo for the sake of their marriage.
The thing is, Ethan seems angry and distant, it’s obvious he’s having trouble processing what all has gone on in the past couple of years and he feels like he has given up his relationship with his siblings for his marriage… and he’s angry about it because in a perfect world, one wouldn’t have to choose. The question is, will they split up, ultimately? We don’t know yet, but something has to give. Stay tuned!!!
