You know, in a perfect world, Barry Plath and Ethan Plath would be able to talk to each other as Father and Son and commiserate with what each other is going through, as far as rocky marriages go, and maybe, just maybe, they could heal each other because they seem to have kind of the same problems.
Ethan compartmentalizes and buries himself in work and neglects wife Olivia Plath and while Barry doesn’t exactly do that, he does a version of it, or at least he has been up until now and his marriage to Kim has suffered for it. Kim has not really complained of the exact same things that Olivia has and that is probably because her needs are different, but both Father and Son could stand to benefit from learning from each othe right now.
Welcome to Plathville: Could the Plaths actually heal each other?
Sadly, they’re not on speaking terms right now. Barry seems to be complying with Ethan’s wishes to go no-contact with the family and at least one can sort of respect that. However, there’s a lot of learning that both are missing out on right now and let’s face it – Barry needs a friend who isn’t Lydia. Lydia is an 18 year-old girl, she’s not going to really be able to relate to anything that a middle-aged man says, even if he’s not really telling her anything she can’t handle, the fact of the matter is, he needs someone whom he can actually open up to.
He wanted to really spill his feelings to Lydia, and while Lydia is certainly a sympathetic ear, I think we can all agree that she’s not quite the sympathetic ear that Barry actually needs.
If this were a perfect world, we could take Ethan and Barry out with Phillip, Ethan’s mentor, and maybe they could all have a fun little man-to-man talk, Ethan and Barry as Father and son and Phillip could be there as a neutral third party and they could all talk it out.
We might could convince Barry to go out for coffee since everyone consumes caffeine every once in awhile, or perhaps a juice bar. (Don’t worry, Ethan could smuggle in some booze.) In this perfect world, we could let Kim and Olivia have a mother-in-law/daughter-in-law bonding day, hair and nails and maybe some lunch. Or perhaps manis and pedis while they gabbed away about wanting more from life.
But this is not a perfect world, Kim and Olivia hate each other and it’ll be a cold day in hell before Ethan and Phillip touch that crazy situation with a 10 foot pole. (I have a feeling that Phillip especially doesn’t want to get involved with the crazy.
Ever notice how, in spite of knowing the adult Plaths he only really talks to the kids? Let that sink in for a second, if you will.) In this perfect world, the Plaths could essentially help each other heal, since the couples do seem to be facing a lot of the same issues. It’s interesting how these two couples can be so far apart yet have so much in common. Perhaps one day they’ll see that instead of all the glaring differences… but I’m not holding my breath. Stay tuned!!!
