‘Welcome to Plathville’ Spoilers finds that Lydia Plath has been texting a boy that she’s had a crush on, and Kim noticed that it was 100 texts a day. Now, if one actually carries on conversations over text, which is easy to do when one has a phone that isn’t t9 (remember those days?), however Kim is worried that this is going to lead to some emotional investment and potential heartbreak on Lydia’s part. But what Kim doesn’t seem to realize is that Lydia seems to actually know what she’s doing.
Last season it was a big deal for Lydia to even have a phone. This season the phone has been downplayed, since she has it, but Kim and Barry wanted her to use it just for emergencies. However, when you give a 17 year old girl a phone and she has the number of a boy that she has a crush on, then you can be willing to bet that there’s going to be some texts sent.
‘Welcome to Plathville’: Are the Plaths dating views changing?
When Lydia elaborated on the relationship in her confessional she says that no one actually knows “where she is” in regards to the relationship with this boy, and her Mom doesn’t realzie that, in a way, Lydia does know him and probably knows a good deal about this boy’s internal workings. Kim doesn’t seem to get that unlike her generation, gen Z is way more open in text conversations than they are in real life.
‘Welcome to Plathville’: Lydia is no exception.
What’s amazing is, Kim and Barry’s beliefs seems to have evolved, at least a little bit, because they keep telling Lydia that she’s the one who can contact this boy and she’s the one in control, but yet they also tell her that she can’t be texting the boy 100 times a day on a phone that they bought “for rental properties”, we weren’t aware that they had more than one (the farm) but okay, go off, Kim.
But one also wonders something darker, if Kim and Barry aren’t just putting this face forward for the camera, and saying something completely different to Lydia off-camera when TLC isn’t filming.
Kim did say that if Lydia and this boy are still interested in each other after high school then they will have to “do something about it’ but she’s encouraging Lydia to wait until she graduates to date, which, on one hand may be a smart thing if she’s in an excellerated course and is just going to graduate in a few months, because she is 17, but if graduation is more than a year away for Lydia, and this boy, then… what’s the harm in getting to know someone?
Kim doesn’t want Lydia to be taken advantage of, but if that be the case, then she should be advocating that Lydia continue to make her own judgments. That doesn’t necessarily mean that she’s going to go all out and marry the guy in Vegas tomorrow, but texting is not going to ruin anything. We’ll see. Stay tuned!!!
