Esteemed character actor Mark Margolis, renowned for his pivotal mobster role in “Scarface” and prominently acknowledged for his portrayal of the vengeful former drug lord Hector Salamanca in both “Breaking Bad” and its prequel “Better Call Saul,” has passed away at the age of 83.

The actor’s passing took place on Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City following a brief illness, as officially confirmed through a statement issued by his son, Morgan Margolis.

Margolis garnered an Emmy nomination in 2012 for his exceptional performance as a guest actor in “Breaking Bad.” His character, an elderly leader of a drug empire who had been incapacitated by a stroke, unfolded layers of history in “Better Call Saul,” where he made guest appearances from 2016 to 2022.

Margolis shared that he drew from personal experiences caring for a stroke-affected family member in crafting his portrayal of the drug kingpin.

Online platforms reverberated with scenes featuring Hector “Tio” Salamanca, a character whose communication relied solely on vivid facial expressions and the sound of a bell affixed to his wheelchair.

The official “Breaking Bad” social media account lauded Margolis for his immense talent, employing his eyes, a bell, and succinct dialogue to etch Hector Salamanca’s legacy into the fabric of television history.
