‘Welcome to Plathville’ Spoilers indicate that, when you look at Olivia Plath’s motivations for moving out of the house with hubby Ethan Plath, you have to realize that it was coming from the best place.
A lot of people in the fandom have said that Ethan married a different version of Kim and that he is always acquiescing to what Olivia wants. The thing is, I think Olivia recognized this (and she may have read a few of the fandom comments online, she doesn’t live in North Korea, yano.) and decided to take action that actually empowered Ethan.

She said that as long as she stuck around and “kept his world together” that he wasn’t being forced to look at the real problems – so that’s why she moved out.
Some may view this as a heavyhanded way of getting Ethan to bend to her will, but it’s actually not. Olivia completely backed off and made the choice completely Ethan-centric, which is something that I don’t think he’s used to.
He said last week that when he was growing up it was always Kim’s way or the highway in the household, even though they said that Barry Plath was ‘head of household’ and of course Kim would always say that he had the final say in everything, Ethan told Kim that while Barry may be the head, she is the neck and she has a tendency to move Barry whichever way she wants.
This has built up a lot of resentment in Ethan, and has caused some definite cognitive dissonance within his marriage. This is why Olivia made the choice Ethan’s, she took herself out of the equation, which is actually a pretty healthy thing to do.
No, it may not be the choice that’s going to be easiest on Ethan, but emotional growth is never easy and sometimes you just have to emotionally unpack thing so that you can heal – this does not necessarily mean in therapy – this just means that sometimes you have to bite the bullet and realize that some things in your life have to change in order for things to be able to work. Ethan’s not in this marriage alone, he and Olivia have some growing to do. Stay tuned!!!
