    TLC Unpolished

This episode opens with Lexi prepping for a (vague) surgery. It seems to be some sort of reconstruction of a previous boob job, but details are kept very minimal. What is not minimal is the amount of familial support in the waiting room, as her dad (“Big Mike”), mom, Bria, and both sister’s boyfriends come along for support. I’m sure the waiting room liaison loved that, especially since the procedure seemed to run unusually long. Ultimately, we learn that the surgery is a success and Lexi lays low for the next week as she recovers.

We also get to watch Lexi’s process as she creates nails for a big profile customer later in the month. Hired to promote their new nail polish line, Lexi comes up with the idea to make magnetic, interchangeable, geometric shapes from the new colors. We get to see how her creative mind works, which is actually pretty cool, and a good testament to her unique ability and work ethic. She talks more about her past struggles with weight too, and how this year, she won’t be shirking the spotlight, or squirming in front of the camera’s flashbulbs.

Foxy (one of my emerging favorite characters) also gets a turn in the episode spotlight as she teases her customer’s hair to sky scraper heights. Her easy banter and obvious skill (albeit in the Long Island, “mo’hairspray, mo’ better” lane) are fun and entertaining to watch, and I hope they turn the camera on her more as the show progresses.
While the main focus of Lexi’s talent is aimed at her big time NYC show in this episode, I do enjoy the scattering of other stories about why her clients seek out zany nails. For example, although it’s just a short segment, a woman comes in wanting a portrait of her dead dog placed on her…nails. You can’t expect everyone to memorialize their deceased pets in the same way, and this is a great example of that. I really am becoming fond of how gently Lexi handles her clients, and treats their requests with so much compassion.

Lexi and Bria also attempt another ‘talk” about Matthew in this episode. Predictably, it does not go well. Bria asks for some latitude to make her own choices (mistakes!) when it comes to Matthew and Lexi responds by saying she can’t ignore his past behavior. Each sister’s point of view comes across fairly, but they are unable to come to any sort of understanding. What appears to be water under the bridge (and infinite second chances) to Bria, is a fool’s errand to Lexi.

The episode ends with Lexi getting all the pats on the back and accolades for her nail art work at the fancy schmancy event in NYC. She really seems to be a star in this arena and it’s fun to be a fly on the wall watching her enjoy all her hard-won success! I find myself really rooting for these ladies, and imagine that despite the drama that’s sure to escalate, they will find ways to endear themselves to the audience along the way, which can be hard to do. Even Matthew, who is somewhat of a doofus, comes across as strangely likable!

    B. Novak is and has always been a soap opera lover. He was first introduced to the world of soaps when his mom used to watch them when he was a kid in French. Yes, in French! That's how he first discovered the wickedly delicious beauty of the sinuous storylines that make the soap opera world. He had to take a break for some time due to other life commitments but he's back to watching Soap Operas and looks forward to writing about them each and every day.
