This past Friday (April 22), ‘The Young and the Restless’ (Y&R) spoilers find that star Eric Braeden (Victor Newman), 82, announced via a Facebook Live that he’s been diagnosed with cancer and is having one treatment a week for six weeks to battle it.
The legendary daytime star began his broadcast by thanking everyone for their outpouring of support and love for him, and then explained what he was feeling and the process that led to his diagnosis and current immunotherapy treatment.
Immunotherapy treatment is defined by the American Cancer Society as “treatment that uses a person’s own immune system to fight cancer” and “can boost or change how the immune system works so it can find and attack cancer cells.”
He learned he had cancer when he was recovering from knee surgery and he “Began to have problems with my prostate,” and, “I hate to be this personal, but I think this may be good for some older guys who may or may not listen to this.”
He was experiencing frequent urination up to every half hour and eventually it became so painful he couldn’t go anymore, so he went to see a urologist. The urologist suggested he have a urolift, which is a procedure to relieve pressure on the urethra.
‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers: A second opinion
It’s always smart to get a second opinion, and Eric did just that by visiting Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.
The urologist was able to help him relieve pressure on his bladder during his initial visit, and a few days later he returned to learn he had cancer.
Eric said, “Needless to say, I was taken aback, but I was determined to deal with it.”
He had the urolift procedure done and the doctor removed the cancer cells. However, a biopsy a week later revealed he had high-grade cancer cells near his bladder and that’s what he’s undergoing treatment for now.
He went on to explain he was told to expect some weakness and flu like symptoms, but he was okay after his first treatment.
He posted his update on Facebook shortly after his second procedure a told his fans he’s doing okay.
‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers: Continuing ahead
Eric is still able to work while undergoing his treatments, and he explained how he’s thankful and that it gives him something else to focus on.
While he can’t “go all out”, he promised that he’s learned to listen to his body and he’ll be back in “top form again soon.”
Fighting back tears, he closed his announcement with:
“I still am happy to be able to go work. It distracts me. I love acting. I love knowing that I entertain people.”
“I love your support. It means a lot. So whenever you have someone in the family who goes through this, support them. It can work out.
“I also know someone close to me who has had cancer, with chemo, which is tougher, much tougher. They have survived it. So nowadays, there’s so much advance in cancer treatment. You can survive it.”
With that, he paused before saying farewell to his followers and blew a kiss toward the camera.
We wish Eric the best and hope he has a fast and full recovery. Victor Newman may be a lightning rod and pain in the rear on the show, but Eric is the one that’s made him so epic and we hope to see him in action for many more years.
