‘The Young & the Restless’ spoilers reveal that Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) needs a good redemption arc to save her character from being an untamable villainess.
The best part of the soaps is watching characters learn and grow. It seems like the character of Phyllis is constantly going backward.
‘The Young and The Restless’ Spoilers: Spoilers A Bit of Phyllis’s History
When she first came onto the canvas, she was an evil, vengeful shrew who tried to run over Paul Williams (Doug Davidson) and Christine Blair Williams (Lauralee Bell).
Years after the incident, Christine found the evidence tying Phyllis to the crime. Christine brought the case to court, and the judge let Phyllis get away with it.
Phyllis never showed an ounce of remorse for trying to kill Christine. This personality made her unrelatable and hard to root for. She never apologized or paid for her crimes.
When Phyllis was with Jack Abbot (Peter Bergman), she seemed like a different character. She was lighter, having more humor and even a hint of empathy.
It didn’t last long. Phyllis had an affair with Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) when he was married to Sharon Newman (Sharon Case), and the relationship was controversial.
Diehard Nick and Sharon fans despised Phyllis for having an affair with Nick after Nick and Sharon’s daughter, Cassie Newman (Camryn Grimes), died.
Fast forward to 2022 and 2023, Phyllis teamed up with Jeremy Stark (James Hyde) to frame Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) for her murder. Phyllis planned to fake her death and have Diane take the fall. Stark and Phyllis’s plan was brazen and elaborate.
‘The Young and The Restless’ Spoilers: Phyllis Could Have Been Redeemed
The redheaded vixen had her friends and family grieving while she stayed in a hotel with Stark. After witnessing her funeral, Phyllis had an attack of conscience and wanted to tell her kids she was alive.
Stark wouldn’t let her tell the truth, and he threatened Phyllis. She killed Stark in self-defense and hid the body.
Phyllis put her daughter in legal jeopardy by making Summer Newman (Allison Lanier) swear she wouldn’t tell anyone she was alive.
When everyone found out that Phyllis was alive, half the town wanted to kill her for real.
Phyllis pleaded guilty to protect Summer and got off with probation. Recently, Tucker McCall (Trevor St. John) paid Phyllis big money to hack into Billy Abbot’s (Jason Thompson) computer and frame Billy.
While doing this, she claims to have reformed and is trying to do better.
You would think that Y&R would have allowed Phyllis to evolve a bit and create some kind of redemption arc for the character, but the show continues to write her poorly and waste the incredible talent that is Michelle Stafford.
The character of Phyllis needs a significant overhaul and fast. In the past, you could see shades of grey in the character that gave her potential.
Yet, the show wants to keep making Phyllis the villain instead of a multi-layered character who has the capacity to change.
Fans have wanted to see Phyllis redeemed for a long time, and it would be easy for the writers to continue portraying this character as a self-centered hypocrite.
Hopefully, Y&R can get it together and fix their Phyllis problem.
