‘The Young and the Restless’ (Y&R) spoilers celebrate Michelle Stafford’s 30th anniversary of playing the infamous Phyllis Summers Newman on the soap. Stafford made her Y&R debut on October 18th, 1994.

The Young and the Restless Spoilers: Phyllis Was Only Supposed To Be A Short-Term Role

When the character was first introduced to the canvas, she was only supposed to stick around for three weeks. Bill Bell created Phyllis, and according to her portrayer,

“He didn’t have a vision for the character because she wasn’t meant to hang around. She would come on for a few episodes and then be gone.”

Thirty years later, Phyllis remains a fixture in Genoa City. Initially, Phyllis would only cause some trouble and then make her exit, never to be heard from again.

Phyllis will receive her special tribute episode on October 18th. There will be several fun flashbacks for long-time viewers, and newer viers will learn more about her character’s history.

Stafford said the tribute episode will also emphasize “the evolution of Phyllis,” how she’s changed throughout the years, and how far she’s come.

“As we were shooting it, they showed some clips that they were going to show, and I was just like, ‘Oh my God, I remember that day,”

    Stafford exclaimed.

When Phyllis first came on the show, she was a spoiler in Danny Romalotti‘s (Michael Damian) and Christine Blair‘s (Lauralee Bell) marriage. Phyllis was obsessed with rock star Danny and drugged him so he would sleep with her.

Phyllis tricked Danny into believing she was pregnant with his son, Daniel Romalotti (Michael Graziadei). However, Daniel’s biological father was later revealed to be Brian Hamilton.

‘The Young And The Restless’ Spoilers: Phyllis Has Evolved Over The Years

In December 1994, Phyllis cemented her role as the villain on the show when she ran down Christine and Paul Williams (Doug Davidson) with a rental car.

Christine uncovered Phyllis’s many crimes involving Danny to free him from his marriage to her. Phyllis thought Danny would love her again if she removed Christine from the equation.

One of the storylines that showcased Stafford’s incredible talent was Phyllis’s affair with Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow). At the same time, he was married to Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) following the death of his daughter, Cassie Newman (Camryn Grimes).

Phyllis became more multi-layered with the story. He eventually divorced Sharon and wed Phyllis. They had a little girl named Summer Newman (Allison Lanier).

These days, Phyllis has been busy helping her son, Daniel, through the loss of his true love, Heather Stevens (Vail Bloom), who was, ironically, murdered by Sharon, who’s been off her bipolar medicine for months.

On October 11th, the cast and crew at Y&R celebrated Stafford’s anniversary with a party. The actress brought her two children, Natalia and Jameson, for the celebration.

The studio was artfully decorated with balloons and pictures of Stafford throughout the years. There were adorable cupcakes with a picture of Michelle’s face when she first came on the show, big hair and all, and a picture of her now.

Stafford looks back on her journey as Phyllis throughout the years, and she can’t believe how lucky she is to have been able to play her alter ego for this long.
