‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers: Have We All Had Enough of the Redundant Kidnapping Plots Yet?

‘The Young and the Restless’ (Y&R) spoilers suggest that many fans (as well as soap critics) have had enough of Y&R’s redundant kidnapping plots.

‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers: Who in Genoa City HASN’T Been Kidnapped?

It seems like almost everyone in Genoa City gets kidnapped at some point. Almost every character on this soap has been held hostage.

Viewers have been saying this for well over a year now. Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) alone has been kidnapped three times in less than one year.

First, Sharon was kidnapped by the crazy Jordan Howard (Colleen Zenk) and had visions of a supposedly dead villain, Cameron Kirsten (Linden Ashby). Admittedly, Ashby’s sense of humor and charisma made the story work.

However, soon after, Sharon was kidnapped along with Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) by crazy Martin Laurent (Christopher Cousins) at the expense of poor love-starved Traci Abbott’s(Beth Maitland) wonderful love story with whom we thought was his good twin brother, Alan Laurent.

Then, Sharon was held hostage in France along with Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow). Granted, it wasn’t technically kidnapping, but it’s the same principle.

Then, Sienna Bacall (Tamara Braun) and Noah Newman (Lucas Adams) were kidnapped and held hostage by Matt Clark (Roger Howarth).

Then, Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes) kidnapped Devon Winters (Bryton James) and Abby Newman’s (Melissa Ordway) young son, Dominic Winters (Ethan Ray Clark), and has been having visions of the potentially deceased Ian Ward (Ray Wise).

Now, Victor Newman (Eric Braden) is supposedly faking a kidnapping of Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) and Lily and Cane Ashby’s (Billy Flynn) children. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Not to mention, if you count how many times Y&R characters have been kidnapped in the span of five years, we’d be here all day.

‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers: Back In the Day, Y&R Shocked Viewers

We all love good mysteries. However, Y&R is overplaying its hand with kidnapping stories. Back in the day, Y&R knew what the hell they were doing.

Now, Josh Griffith is repeating stories, and they all seem to lack suspense or reason. The drama is simply missing from the equation. Soap outlets and critics have been noticing this about Y&R for the past 15 or so years.

Back when Shelia Carter (Kimberlin Brown) was first introduced on Y&R, the show did a good job of portraying some of her shocking actions, like kidnapping Lauren Fenmore (Tracey E. Bregman).

In a famous Y&R storyline from 1980 (and, admittedly, I wasn’t born yet), Victor kidnapped his first wife, Julia Newman’s (Meg Bennett) lover, Michael Scott (Nick Benedict), and it established Victor as a ruthless, bada**, not-to-be-messed-with, exciting villain.

Victor imprisoned Michael in a secret, soundproof bomb shelter, which he constructed himself. He installed a closed- circuit camera system to watch him.

The Mustache also forced him to watch intimate moments between Victor and his wife on a monitor. Oh, and he also forced his prisoner to eat rats.

The character of Victor was originally intended to have a 12-week story arc on the show. However, fans responded well because the story was well-written and shocking.

Y&R was good back in the day, and with a little creativity and some work, it could be good again. Josh Griffith needs to stop repeatedly overusing plots and underestimating the audience.
