‘The Amazing Race’ spoilers find that season 33 finally, finally premiered on CBS this week and as teams got to know each other, they discovered there were some real-life superheroes in their midst.

If the names Anthony Sadler and Spencer Stone seem familiar, it is because back in 2015 these childhood friends from Sacramento, California happened to be travelling through Europe when they, and a third friend, Alek Skarlatos stopped a terrorist from shooting up a train!

When The Amazing Race premiered this week, Sadler and Stone met another team at the airport and they began to learn about each other. The other team was floored to hear their fellow team’s story of heroism.

‘The Amazing Race’ Spoilers: Two Real-Life Heroes Race In Season 33

It was August 21, 2015 when Sadler, Stone and Skarlatos (not on The Race) boarded a train in Amsterdam bound for Paris via Brussels. A 25-year-old  man from Morocco, believed to be Ayoub El-Khazzani was also travelling on the train. El-Khazzani was armed with an AKM assault rifle and equipped with 270 rounds of ammunition.

After a different passenger first attempted to stop the gunman, Stone, Sadler and their friend tackled the terrorist and, with another passenger- British man, Chris Norman- beat the gunman in the head with the muzzle of his own gun until he was rendered unconscious. The heroes managed to stop what promised to be a tragic and bloody event from occurring.

As Stone told his fellow racer during the episode that aired this Wednesday, the gunman shot at Stone’s head but the rifle didn’t go off. He also showed off his deep scars in the back of his neck where the assailant sliced him with a box-cutter. He almost lost his thumb during the heroics, also.

Throughout the premier episode of The Amazing Race, audiences saw photos of the two racers receiving awards for their heroism from former U.S. President Barack Obama  at a ceremony at the Pentagon. The men also revealed that they received French citizenship from then French President, François Hollande during a challenge where they had to decorate a cake with the French flag.

Sadler and Stone managed to outrace their competitors during the first leg, being the first pair to meet host, Phil Keoghan at the mat and it looks like they will be a strong team throughout the race- if they are NOT one of the teams who weren’t able to come back after the pandemic shutdown forced the longest pit stop of all time.

If you are inspired by Stone and Sadler’s heroism you can read their book titled The 15:17 to Paris or watch them play themselves in the Clint Eastwood directed movie of the same name.

Or you can tune into The Amazing Race, Wednesdays on CBS at 8pm ET
