The Brigham Young University football team had a devastating loss this past weekend when their freshman offensive linebacker, Sione Veikoso, was found dead in his home in Kailua, Hawaii. On Friday, a retaining wall at his home collapsed. It was part of the ongoing construction in the home and he was caught beneath some of the rubble.
He was actually helping to repair this wall when it happened. He wasn’t the only one hurt though. There were three other people in the home who were also helping to make repairs and they were injured as well.

When the fire department arrived at the scene, there were already neighbors, friends, and bystanders that were trying to rescue those who were in the home. These bystanders were doing everything that they could to help to pick up the rubble that was crushing all four of them. Veikoso was the one who was trapped deeper than anyone else. He was pronounced dead at the scene after they were able to extract his body from the rubble.

Veikoso was in his first season at BYU after he transferred from Arizona State. He was 6-foot-7 and 305 pounds. He was playing as a lineman on the team and he was loved by everyone he met. The BYU football team shared on Twitter, “On behalf of the entire BYU football family, our thoughts and prayers are with Sione’s family and friends during this extremely difficult time.
Rest in Love, Sione. God be with you till we meet again.” His coach added, “We are extremely saddened to learn of the tragic death of one of our brothers, Sione Veikoso. His passing is heartbreaking to all of us… Our love for you is forever, Sione!”
More love was shown for Sione and his family. The athletic director for BYU wrote, “The BYU football family mourns the passing of our dear teammate and fellow Cougar, Sione Veikoso. May his family and friends feel our love and faith at this most sacred and difficult time. Peace be with you now and forever, Sione.” BYU Football has helped to set up a GoFundMe for Sione’s funeral costs.
This is a tragic loss for BYU and for Sione’s family and friends. We hope that his family can take the time that they need to grieve over this horrible accident and all of our hearts go out to his family, his friends, and of course, the BYU football team as they all try to get through this.
