Well, either he loves him or he just loves to describe him. A lot of people believe that Prince Harry has done quite a job of painting his father in a rather negative light in his new book, Spare. In fact, many can’t help but wonder just why the Duke of Sussex writes about his father as though he was an ‘emotionally crippled’ royal who was bullied during his childhood. Here’s what you need to know.

In Spare, Harry portrays his father, 74, as emotionally crippled, the victim of brutal childhood bullying. But among the many contradictions in the book, Harry also characterizes the king as a doting father who favors strong French aftershave and conducts headstands in his underwear to alleviate polo-induced back pain.

The royal family have maintained a studied silence as painful details from the book, and a round of pre-publication TV interviews have piled up. In his Telegraph interview, Harry said he was airing his grievances in public not to “collapse” the royal family but because he had a “responsibility” to reform it in order to protect Prince William’s children. William, he said, “has made it very clear to me that his kids are not my responsibility.”

The book comes on the back of the six-hour Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan. Talking about his reasons for doing what he is doing, Harry said: “This is not about trying to collapse the monarchy, this is about trying to save them from themselves. And I know that I will get crucified by numerous people for saying that.”

Spare sees Harry expressing his frustration at being the “spare to the heir”, his anger at the UK media, his unresolved trauma over the death of his mother, his mental health struggles, his lonely life before meeting Meghan, and the breakdown of his family relationships.
