Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, celebrates her 60th birthday tomorrow, January 20, 2025. She’s become widely recognized as the royal family’s secret weapon.
Sophie Is An Asset To The Royal Family
One of Sophie’s best friends, Mary Montagu-Scott, exclaimed, “Sophie is both an asset to the nation and the royal family, but more than anything, she is a fantastic friend.”
Born in 1965 in Oxford, England, she is married to Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, the youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II.
She grew up in Brenchley, Kent. After she attended West Kent College, a private girl’s school, she went to a local secretarial college. She was a press officer for Capital Radio, a popular London-based radio station.
In 1996, she established a public relations company with her business partner, Murray Harkin. She made it clear that she intended to continue her career after marriage.
The Duchess met Prince Edward at Capital Radio in 1987, and the two began dating in 1993. The couple was married on June 19, 1999, at St. George’s Chapel.
Sophie was the first “commoner” to marry a senior royal family member. In 2002, she closed her business to focus solely on her royal duties.
The couple share two children, Lady Louise Mountbatten, Windsor, and James Mountbatten, Earl of Wessex.
Sophie Will Celebrate Her 60th Birthday With Her Family
In November 2003, when Sophie was pregnant with Lady Louise, she had severe cramps and went to the hospital and had an emergency cesarean. The birth was very traumatic, as the mother and daughter almost died. Thankfully, they both survived.
The birth of her son, James, in December 2007 was less traumatic, but once again, she had to have a cesarean section.
Sophie usually spends most of her time at Bagshot Park, the Surrey home she shares with her husband.
Always the hardest worker in the bunch, Sophie will return to work the next day, visiting the charity Dogs for Autism and a school for children with physical disabilities.
Last year, Sophie carried out 257 royal engagements at home and abroad. She’s one of the hardest-working royals in the Firm.
Many of the places she travels are where no other royals care to visit, which is why she’s often referred to as the “secret weapon.” Sophie plays a critical role in the slimmed-down monarchy; her work is invaluable.
Sophie Patrons Charities That Help People With Disabilities
Sophie is a patron of over seventy charities and organizations, and she’s especially interested in helping those with disabilities, especially children.
When speaking about why she felt compelled to help people with disabilities, she shared,
“It goes back to when I first started to get involved with taking on patronages and engagements. I was trying to find, not a unique thing for myself, but a direction of travel I suppose,”
She explained.
“And of course, inevitably, every time I went down a route, I found a member of the family working very hard doing something, and I retreated a bit and thought, no, not there. Treading on toes.”
Sophie reasoned that the concept of how people engage with each other differently and the issues surrounding raising awareness of this made her want to champion the cause.
The Duchess shared a very close bond with the late Queen and is also close to Princess Kate. She stepped up to support Kate when it was revealed that Kate was diagnosed with cancer.
She provided the emotional support Kate needed and also undertook extra engagements when Kate wasn’t able to work. Thankfully, the Princess is officially in remission, which Sophie is delighted about.
The hard work of Sophie and Edward will become more apparent in the coming years, as they are the only working royals under the age of retirement besides Prince William and Princess Kate. We wish Sophie a very Wonderful 60th birthday!
